KETO/LOW CARB

What is KETO?

Intentional reduction of carbohydrates in the diet in order to produce ketones as an alternative energy source.

The body is able to use fat (including yours) as the main source of energy if the liver has the ability to convert fat into ketones.

This puts us in a state we call NUTRITIONAL KETOSIS.

What are ketones? (in simplicity)

  • it is a product of fat burning
  • alternative and more efficient fuel than glucose

  • they are formed from carbohydrate deficiency

Nutritional ketosis is not ketoacidosis!

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is an acute complication of diabetes mellitus. It is caused by a combination of absolute or relative insulin deficiency with a high concentration of counter-regulatory hormones, especially patients with DM1 are at risk.

What is LOW CARB?

It is a diet where we significantly reduce carbohydrates, but not so much that the body gets into a state of nutritional ketosis.
